Tell us something about yourself.
I was born in Washington D.C., but was primarily raised in Southern California. All of my life I’ve enjoyed writing and helping people. I am a single Mother of two beautiful children, have been homeless and laid off six times. I have used my struggles as an opportunity to not only make a difference in my life, but in the lives of the people around me. I have hosted my own radio show, “Ask Sharifah Radio,” had the pleasure of having my first on camera, exclusive interview with Patti LaBelle and helped business owners create a successful online presence.
What inspired you to write this book?
I was inspired to write, “And Here’s Your Box – From Laid Off to Loving Life” because I fell in love with the stories and the guests on my radio show. I had the honor and the privilege of having some amazing guests on my radio show. There were guests who made you cry, guests who made you think, guests who made you laugh and I felt an overwhelming need to share there stories with the world.
In addition, by sharing my story of being laid off six times I’m hopeful that someone else who has been effected by mass layoffs and the struggling economy will take a look at my story and say to themselves, “If Sharifah can do it, I can do it too!”
How did you choose the title?
I chose the title because each and every time I was laid off, “and here’s your box” was always the last statement I heard from the company. That sentence seemed to have stuck in my head like a bad memory. Each time I was laid off the company would start with, “It’s not personal Sharifah. It’s business. Now we need you to sign these papers, return your keys and here’s your box.” So I’d take that last box, locate all of my personal belongings, pack them into a box and move forward into the unknown.
Did you learn anything from writing and publishing this book? What?
Since this was my first book I certainly learned a lot. The main lesson that I learned is to spend more time on the editing of the book. I was so excited about writing a book and sharing the stories I did not focus as much time as I should have or could have on the finished product. Based upon the lessons I learned in the original version of my book I went back to print, updated the book and released Version 2 of my book.
I also learned to just tell your story, sing your song and write your book. You will never be able to make all of the people happy all of the time so just try to present the best product possible. When I released my first book there were so many people who reviewed the book who said, “You should have done this way. You should have said this this way.” I took many of the comments into account and updated the book, but I focused on telling my story and sharing the stories of the guests included.
If you were doing it all over again, what would you do differently?
If I were doing it all over again I would have included more of my story in the book. Readers came back and consistently said, “We wanted more.” When I initially wrote the book I wanted to focus more on the guests. I really believed that’s what people would care about and would want to hear about and I did not include enough about me, the author. I would share more of my struggles and situations that readers can relate to as opposed to just saying, “Here’s the stories. Read them. Listen to them. Take notes on them.”
Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?
I am currently in the editing process for my second book. This book will include more life lessons and success motto’s from successful business owners, celebrities and entrepreneurs. It will be another coffee table type book that will allow people to learn not only from the struggles of other business owners but from their struggles as well. It will provide valuable insight to new business owners just starting out in their field as to what to do and not to do to be successful. Look for it soon in your favorite book stores!
