My first book is called The Joy of Green Cleaning – now don’t laugh, I’ve found that if you remove some of the chemicals from your cleaning you may actually start enjoying it. I didn’t say love it, but it may not be as bad as it’s been for you! I’ve put together a collection of over 70 recipes so you can make your own cleaners from ingredients you can find in your pantry. I also have some old fashioned recipes from my great grandmothers era. You’ll be surprised how well these “old” cleaners really work.
Tell us something about yourself.
I am a speaker, author and advocate for the green cleaning movement. I have been in the cleaning industry for 20 years and have first hand experience about the damage that cleaning chemicals can do to your body. Simple changes can make a big difference. I speak all over the country to teach and encourage people to green their cleaning. I have hundreds of testimonies from people about how much better they feel once they have taken the chemicals out of their home. That’s why I ‘m called a “coach”.
What inspired you to write this book?
It started when I was given my great grandmothers bible and in it were all the things she treasured. I found that the laundry recipe she used was so simple I had to try it. I found all four ingredients and mixed up a batch. I was very suprised to find it really worked! After that I started researching all sorts of recipes that use simple ingredients like baking soda, salt, lemon juice and vinegar. We tested them in my home and found that they work as well if not better than “traditional”cleaners. I had to share these recipes so I wrote a “recipe book” for green cleaning.
How did you choose the title?
My favorite greeting when someone leaves my store is “happy cleaning”. It usually gets one of two responses. Either the person laughs hysterically and rolls their eyes or they smile and say- “you know, now that I’ve been using some of your recipes, I find some joy in cleaning”. That was how the title evolved.
What obstacles did you encounter in getting this book published? How did you overcome them?
I never really had any obstacles in getting it published. I found a wonderful publishing company that has walked me through every step. They are priceless!
Did you learn anything from writing and publishing this book? What?
I learned that writing the book is the easy part. Doing the marketing and getting the information out to the public is the really hard part. I am always sharing the information in my book with bloggers and in my talks all over the country.
Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?
I’ve started my next book with a co-publisher called Back To Basics Housekeeping. This book will have more backround and history than my first book. I’m very excited about writing this. I believe people need to understand why we are told we need to use chemicals to clean with, when simple things can work just as well.
What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?
Just do it-
I have that poster in my office and I see it every day. I made a writing schedule and stuck to it. I got up very early every morning and wrote for atleast an hour every day. Everyone is different, but you have to make a plan for how you are going to get the book done.
Who is the perfect reader for your book?
I have three readers that are perfect for my book. The first readers are moms with young children who are worried about the health of their children. The next readers are mature women that have seen the affects of using chemicals during their lives and remember what it was like to use simpler cleaners. These women LOVE my book because they actually remember using my recipes to clean with. The third readers are anyone that cleans professionally. These people are seeing the affects of chemicals in their bodies every day, but may not even realize it. Once they try using “green cleaners” they find that they feel better and don’t have to work any harder with these simple recipes.
Where can readers learn more about you and your book?
