Senate. Ambition. A fiction political thriller about the re-election of a U.S. Senator from Florida. The book features a plot that evolves into murder, sex, international intrigue, and hard ball politics. I co-wrote this book with experienced novelist, Rhett DeVane, and it is in the process of being published on demand by Infinity Press. (Coming in September, 2010.)
I previously published a memoir about my career in the Florida Legislature: The Golden Years… The Florida Legislature, ’70s and ’80s
Tell us something about yourself.
I am a former Florida Senator and member of the House of Representatives, representing South Florida. I have written a memoir (“The Golden Years…The Florida Legislature, ’70s and ’80s. Reflections on Campaigns and Public Service.”), that was won 2 national literary awards, and is being made into a public television documentary. I am a retired businessman having worked for IBM and three major corporations.
What inspired you to write this book?
I was inspired to write this new novel by the success of the memoir.
How did you publish this book? Why did you decide on that publisher?
My co-author and I hired an agent to get the novel published, but did not find the kind of deals available acceptable, and we decided to try printing on demand with Infinity. We are not sorry.
How did you know you wanted to be a writer? How did you get started?
I did not know that I had book writing skills, but I do have a decent memory. I tried it and with the help of other professionals, I have found writing very enjoyable.
How do you do research for your books?
Since the subject of the novel is current politics, and I have served in office, I simply drew on my own personal experiences.
Did you learn anything from writing this book? What?
In co-writing the novel, I gained a new appreciation for the necessity of attention to details required in making fiction of interest to readers. I am appreciative of my co-author for teaching me that fundamental.
What are you reading now?
I am reading several recent books by novelist Stuart Woods.
Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?
I have started assembling a new non-fiction book based on the contents of my political blog.
What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?
My best advice is to enjoy what you are writing–I find the work flows naturally rather than forcing the writing.
What are you doing to promote your latest book?
We are scheduling a roll out and book signing tour of our new book, expected to be released just before the primary elections in September, 2010.
Where can readers learn more about you and your book?
The novel will be released in September, 2010, and will be available at http://www.buybooksontheweb.com/ (ISBN 0-7414-6036-X).
