Pastor Deb Ling – Author Interview

What is your most recent book? Tell us a bit about it.

My latest ebook is called The Walking Wounded. It is for those that want to be healed of their wounds that were incurred through trauma or abuse. When we go through trauma or are abused, our inner person takes in the wounds that cannot be seen. That is what this teaching addresses.

Tell us something about yourself.

I am a California girl. I love the warm weather, the sun and the beach. I have been writing since elementary school where I found that if my grades were not high enough I could write an extra credit report to raise my grade, and it always did. I have been writing ever since. Poetry, skits, articles and ebooks.

What inspired you to write this book?

I was inspired to write this ebook because I am an ex-abuse victim that needed a lot of healing, and the Lord saw to that. The scriptures He used to heal me is what makes this ebook come to life. I documented what He gave me to be healed, so I could help others.

How did you choose the title?

When a person goes through trauma and/or is abused, they receive wounds in their spirit. That does not stop them from functioning, they continue to walk the walk to the best of their ability. They may become a believer after they have been wounded and not realize until later that they can be healed, like I did. They are the Walking Wounded.

What obstacles did you encounter in getting this book published? How did you overcome them?

The obstacles I came into originally was not knowing how to get the ebook published. When I wrote this years ago, a lot of the options available today were not there. I just waited. I recently found a means of having a free web site that also gave me a shopping cart so I could sell from the site. I set it up.

How did you know you wanted to be a writer? How did you get started?

How did I know I wanted to be a writer? … That ‘aha’ moment has only come recently. I have been writing for years but never considered myself ‘a writer,’ until recently when someone pointed out to me that I was writing regularly which in turn made me a writer – duh. Lack of self confidence reinforced it so that I did not see what was actually going on in my life.

Do you have any writing rituals?

I don’t have any writing rituals but I found that my day will be gone if I do not set a specific schedule for spending time writing.

Did you learn anything from writing and publishing this book? What?

I learned a lot about what the Lord can do with a willing vessel as I wrote this ebook. I also found that when He tells you this will be your first book (which He did tell me), then He will see it come to fruition, just not necessarily in the time frame you expect. LOL

I also found that it is not easy to put yourself out there for all to see. My ebook talks about my past abuse and some of the things I went through because of it and putting that on display for the world to see was not the easiest thing to do.

If you were doing it all over again, what would you do differently?

I don’t know that I would do anything differently. Previous to now I am not sure I would have handled putting myself out there the same as I can do it now.

What types of books do you like to read? Who are your favorite authors? Why?

I enjoy reading Christian novels like the Narnia series or the Left Behind series. There are many Christian novel authors and I am not particular to any of them. The reason I read Christian novels is because I do not personally like the storylines of books these days where ‘everything goes’.

Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?

Yes, I am working on three new manuscripts actually. When I get stuck on one I work on one of the others. But the first one that I think will be done is the mate to the Walking Wounded. The Walking Wounded was written from the perspective of a woman (me) for women. I did not realize that until I ran into a few men that could have benefited from the teaching, had it not been geared towards women. So now I am working on the Wounded Soldier which is geared towards the men.

What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?

The best advice I can give to other writers would be to first and foremost Believe in Yourself! Get a support group to be there for you in times when you are down. Ones that will verbally support what you are doing, so if you get stuck or depressed they can help pick you back up and get you going again.

Who is the perfect reader for your book?

The perfect reader for my ebook would be those that have been traumatized and/or abused in some way during their life, or Christian counselors that work with these people.

Where can readers learn more about you and your book?

Readers can find out more about my book at http://www.victimsofabuse.webs.com

  1. The Rev Henry M Morris says

I am really glad to see this interview published. I recently read the book and congratulate Deb Ling on a fantastic job of bringing the scripture to life and showing how it is pertinent to today’s issues in our lives. Although I am not an abuse victim, I found solace while reading the book.

I have passed the book to one of our parishioners to see how we might use it in our study and counseling.

Thanks for a really good interview.
