P Moss – Author Interview

What is your most recent book? Tell us a bit about it.

My book Blue Vegas: Stories came out in March. It is a collection of short stories which explore the darker side of life, and the clash between the old and the new Las Vegas. Basic personal emotions like greed and loss and sadness, which when placed in unique Las Vegas settings, can become quite interesting.

Tell us something about yourself.

I am a gambler and former screenwriter, and I own bars in Las Vegas and New York City. I am a film noir buff with a collection of over 1600 black & white crime dramas. I grew up in the midwest and have lived in Los Angeles and New York. I have resided in Las Vegas for the past 18 years.

What inspired you to write this book?

I was writing a novel and got stuck trying to come up with a good ending. There were some interesting characters and situations, so I decided to turn those into short stories. They were good so I wrote more. Inspiration is everywhere in Las Vegas.

What do you feel is the hardest part of writing?

The blank page terrifies me.

What are you reading now?

I just finished reading The High Windows by Raymond Chandler and have started The Smell Of Money by Matthew Head.

Who are your favorite authors and why?

I like James Ellroy and Jim Thompson for their gritty in-your-face-approach, and Truman Capote for his beautiful prose. I would like to think my work contains elements of all three.

Are you working on your next book?

I am working on a novel set in Las Vegas. And I know exactly how to end this one.

What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing and publishing?

If you believe your book is good, keep working on it until it is great. Then work even harder until it is the best. If you are lucky enough to get in a position where an agent or publisher will actually read your book, the writing must set it apart from the countless other manuscripts they see. Find a fresh angle and write your story well to distance yourself from the crowd.

Where can readers learn more about you and your book?

Blue Vegas is in stores at Borders and Barnes & Noble. It can also be purchased on Amazon.com and other online retailers. For more information about me and the book, you can visit the Facebook fan page Blue Vegas: Stories.
