Marvin Ross – Author Interview

What is your most recent book? Tell us a bit about it.

My most recent book is The Original Reigning Cats and Dogs: A Lighthearted Look at Pets and Their Owners which I did with David Shaw who is a brilliant illustrator. This is an expanded and updated version of Reigning Cats and Dogs that David and I did about 20 years ago. We felt that it was time to reissue it as we’ve both gone through quite a few more pets since it first came out and therefore have more information and funny anecdotes

Tell us something about yourself.

I’ve been writing since the late 1970s. I began as a humor writer but then switched into more serious topics and concentrated on medical writing for a number of years. Most of my life has been spent in Toronto but for the past 15 years, I live in a small town (Dundas, Ontario) midway between Toronto and the US border at Niagara Falls.

What inspired you to write this book?

David Shaw and I had done a number of funny books like Cover Your Ass or How to Survive in a Government Bureaucracy and a couple of books on being fathers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This particular book is intended as a funny book on pets rather than on kids since we are both animal lovers

How did you publish this book? Why did you decide to self-publish?

In 2008, I switched from being a writer to becoming a publisher when I self published my own book called Schizophrenia: Medicine’s Mysteries Society’s Shame. I published that book because, as a medical writer and someone with a family member with schizophrenia, I felt that more information was needed to help dispel the stigma surrounding this disease and to demonstrate that it is a disorder of the brain. As a result of publishing that book, I began publishing other books like the mysteries of psychiatrist/writer David Laing Dawson.

What are you doing to promote your latest book?

All of the books that I publish are promoted using social networking, press releases, and finding good reviews for them. I’ve been fortunate in that all the books I publish are getting good reviews.
