Marilyn L. Rice – Sofia’s Legacy

What is your most recent book? Tell us a bit about it.

Sofia’s Legacy

Tell us something about yourself.

I was born in Nottingham in February 1951. That makes me proud of two things: sharing a home town with D H Lawrence and being an Aquarian and Iā€™m a typical Aquarian ā€“ independent, forward thinking, humanitarian and definitely unconventional!

Life, people, cultures all hold a fascination for me. I enjoyed living in the fast lane, looking for adventure and gaining as many experiences as possible. I used the College holidays to take up employment for both money and experience. I was a waitress, a barmaid, a shop assistant, a baby-sitter and I even delivered the Christmas post.

I graduated in 1973 and began a teaching career in Secondary Education that was to last for twenty years. During those years, I married and divorced, like so many of my contemporaries. I travelled, studied Leisure and Tourism, completed a writing course, worked as a p/t holiday hostess, and a market researcher.

Ill health forced me into early retirement from teaching and to take life at a steadier pace. I now spend a lot of my time writing and reading.

What inspired you to write this book?

It is a sequel to ‘Look After Each Other’, which was inspired by 3 things:

1. An unforgettable experience with a man named Derek

2.A strong relationship with my father

3. My experiences with clairvoyants

At the end of ‘Look After Each other’ the reader is left with unanswered questions, which gave me the idea of a trilogy and number three, ‘Love you for ever’ is being written.

How did you choose the title?

The title will always be the last words in the last line of my book. I tend to write the last chapter in draft first and then I know what I’m working toward.

‘Look After Each Other’ is what Sofia always told her children to do.

‘Sofia’s Legacy’ is what her children are

‘Love you for ever’ is what she says to her children now.

How did you know you wanted to be a writer? How did you get started?

Instinct. When forced to retire from teaching on grounds of ill health it felt right.

How do you come up with the names for your characters?

Names I like and they feel right for the character

Did you learn anything from writing and publishing this book? What?

Life is one long learning experience.

If you were doing it all over again, what would you do differently?

What types of books do you like to read? Who are your favorite authors?

A good ‘escape from reality’ book, something which takes me into a different realm.

I love the classics, Dickens, Hardy, Steinbeck and Fitzgerald.

Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?

‘Love You For Ever’ the third book in my ‘Sofia’ trilogy.

What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?
