Robbing You With A Keyboard Instead Of A Gun: Cyber Crime – How They Do It

This is a nuts and bolts book about real world examples of the various types of Internet investment scams, frauds and Ponzi’s that are operating today on the Internet. Not only does the book provide real world examples, but is also tells you how they do it, who all the players are and their roles, how they are able to steal your life savings, but more importantly how not to become a victim.

Tell us something about yourself.

I am originally from Indiana, but have lived in California for the past twenty-six years. This is my first book, and it took me just over a year to write it. In my younger years I was a figure skater in the pairs division competing in the World Roller Skating Championships in the mid-60’s.

I have over twenty years of experience in the insurance, banking, financial services and mortgage industries, and over twenty years of experience as a business management consultant.

What inspired you to write this book?

First I was encouraged to write this book from several different people whom I have a high degree of respect for, and just as important to stop Internet cyber criminals from stealing people’s life savings forcing them into destitution in their retirement years.

How did you choose the title?

The choice for the title was natural for me. I am the founder and president of Eagle Research Associates, Inc., a California 501(c)3 Public Benefit Corporation. We deal with Internet Investment crime, and they use their keyboard to steal millions of dollars.

What obstacles did you encounter in getting this book published? How did you overcome them?

My biggest obstacle was time. As the founder and president of Eagle, my time is spent:

Researching investment scams, frauds, Ponzi’s;
Providing our research to our assigned federal law enforcement agents;
Doing public speaking engagements;
Radio and TV interviews;
Doing Community Seminars;
Writing Guest Columns;
Seeking Donations;
Updating our website content; and
Answering E-mail and telephone inquiries;

which did not leave me much time to write the book. I had to force myself to write every day for at least 30 minutes no matter what. Many times I was writing from 2:00 am – 3:30 am when there were no interruptions from phone calls or E-mails needing to be answered.

How did you know you wanted to be a writer? How did you get started?

I never “knew” I wanted to be a writer. When I was in grade school, I enjoyed writing stories for our story telling time. But after entering High School, I got away from writing. Of course in college I had term papers and book reports, too many to count, but did not consider that “being a writer.”

If my dear friends and other professional people I know and trust had not told me I “had” to write this book to share my knowledge, this book probably would not have been written. It was through their constant harping on me, which they did for at least a year to get me to commit to writing it. They knew if I committed to writing it, I would not break my promise and it would force me to write the book. Sneaky friends.

Do you have any writing rituals?

Not sure I would call them rituals, but what I would do is just write as much as possible each day in the time I had to write to get it down on paper. I did not edit it at that time, just was going for content to put on paper. Then at the end of each week I would go back and begin the editing process of what I had written. When I would finish each chapter, I would give it to friends for them to edit it and give me their feedback.

How do you come up with the names for your characters?

My book does not have names, as we think of in a book, but rather just the generic name for the role each of them play in aiding and abetting in stealing people’s money.

Did you learn anything from writing and publishing this book? What?

Since I spent four years researching Internet investment scams, frauds and Ponzi’s before I formed Eagle, and then another two years before beginning to write the book, there was not any new material for me to learn about these Internet investment scams, frauds, and Ponzi’s. But shortly after my book was published I was surprised at just who were now running these illegal programs. These were professional people we were all taught to trust. They are pastors, rabbi’s, CPA’s, financial planners, real estate brokers, insurance agents, hedge fund traders, retired policemen, talk-show hosts, and senior citizens naming a few.

If you were doing it all over again, what would you do differently?

I would cut down on some of the content in some of the chapters, and add information on identity theft.

What types of books do you like to read? Who are your favorite authors? Why?

I enjoy spy thrillers, espionage, autobiographies, and inspirational stories of people overcoming difficulties or survival.

My favorite authors are Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, Frank Peretti, Dean Koontz, Ann Coulter, and John Grisham.

Because they all keep you involved in their storylines, and your mind can visualize what is happening in their stories.

Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?

Yes, but it is still in the idea stage at the moment. My old nemesis, time, is keeping me from beginning it. With all the other things I am responsible for, I now have added promoting this book to my “To Do” list.

What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?

If this is truly your passion, do not give up. If necessary self-publish your book. While there are some obstacles to overcome when you do self-publish, you can still overcome them.

Who is the perfect reader for your book?

People who are desperate due to their financial situation. The person who is looking for an alternative means to increase their investment return, and are willing to take a gamble. People who want to work from home to supplement their income. Those who truly believe they can make thousands of dollars for a small amount invested. Those who are out of work and are looking for work with no success. Those who believe that an unknown entity on the Internet wants to make them millionaires. Those who are looking to make a fast buck with little or no effort on their part. And no it does not make any difference as to how much or how little education you have either. In fact the conman’s favorite targets are the highly educated, because they are easier to con into their illegal program.

Where can readers learn more about you and your book?

They can learn more about me and my book at: Our website tells all about Eagle, and has a link to information about my book as well as a recorded interview. It also has the link to Amazon where my book can be purchased.
