Kerry Larkan – Author Interview

What is your most recent book? Tell us a bit about it.

Winning The Talent War – The 8 Essentials

What inspired you to write this book?

Lousy management and leadership in many Australian and Asian companies.

How did you publish this book?

It’s published through one of the biggest Asian publishers Marshall Cavendish – Times Publishing and is my second book published by them, the first was; The Talent War.

How did you know you wanted to be a writer? How did you get started?

Writing articles on management and people, self publishing and then pitching to a publisher. Before this I’d published three self published books.

What do you believe is the hardest part of writing?

Research and the discipline to stay focused. Thinking it through from the readers perspective, at least with a business book I think that matters. Who will read it?

How do you do research for your books?

Sheer hard work. Word of mouth and seeking out employers who have above average (well above average) people management practices. Then I interview them. I also spend a lot of time in the state library, my local library and on the www though the net is not always the best source of quality information. Staff at Hong Kong Library got used to me working there for several weeks.

Did you learn anything from writing this book? What?

Lots – it is hard work. There are some exceptional leaders in business and they don’t need to be tyrant’s or bullies to succeed. People want quick fixes and often there are none.

What are you reading now?

For pleasure, Water for the Elephants by Sara Gruen – though I tend to read non fiction but of late have enjoyed some good fiction too.

What types of books do you like to read? Who are your favorite authors? Why?

History books, biographies and stories about people. I don’t have a favourite author as such. I admire the work of Australian author Peter Fitzsimons. I like his style, down to earth and easy to read.

Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?

Not at present, I’m in recovery…

What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?

Practice, practice, practice.

What are you doing to promote your latest book?

Speaking and social media mainly. Talking to CEO circles and syndicates WoM through my consulting but any help would be gratefully accepted …….
