Joseph L. Clough – All the King’s Men

What is your most recent book? Tell us a bit about it.

Tell us something about yourself.

I was born in New Hampshire and live in Monroe, North Carolina. I have been a Sheriff Deputy for 9 years now and enjoy trying to help others. I have never been a writer but have always had a passion about Elvis Presley and the image and music he left us. I am a retired tribute artist and now enjoy working on and publishing coffee table books dedicated to the Elvis Tribute Artist.

What inspired you to write this book?

Simply put…Elvis Presley inspired me! His image and music has inspired millions of fans the world over and continues to inspire future generations as the younger kids are learning all about his legacy all over again!

How did you choose the title?

Well, the title was first used in Robert Penn Warren’s novel in 1947 for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for his political story of a corrupt politician during the 1930’s in the American South. It was then used in two movies based on the book first in 1949 starring Broderick Crawford and then in 2006 starring Jude law and Sean Penn. Then there is the ALL THE KING’S MEN “Wildly Popular, All Female, Cabaret Style, Gender-Bending Performance Troupe” currently performing in Northampton, Ma. Finally, my book has also used the title but for Elvis Tribute Entertainers.

What obstacles did you encounter in getting this book published? How did you overcome them?

The only problem I have encountered so far is the bindery has not finished the book as scheduled. Since I have self published and have only pre-sold 400 copies they take it upon themselves to keep putting my book aside for more involved projects that come along such as a jewelry book with 200,000 copies ordered. Everything else was rather easy mainly I contacted all of the Elvis’s either through Facebook or Myspace primarily Facebook. I asked all of them for pictures and bios and then had every one of them sign Authors Consent Forms allowing me to use their image and likeness in the book. I think we have over 145 of the worlds very best Elvis Tribute Entertainers in this rare book.

How did you know you wanted to be a writer? How did you get started?

I just had a thought and I followed through on it. I used to be an Elvis Impersonator and for years I thought it would be really cool to have a book filled with ETA’s. I call it the coffee book Roll-O-Dex for ETA’s just pick it up and pick the one you want.

Do you have any writing rituals?

No, sorry I am very laid back.

How do you come up with the names for your characters?

Again no characters here just imposters….lol

Did you learn anything from writing and publishing this book? What?

Yes, I learned that even self-publishing is very time consuming and requires a great deal of patience and is not a guarantee. I think when we finally applied for the ISBN number I felt the project was going to be completed I can only imagine how difficult traditional publishing is.

If you were doing it all over again, what would you do differently?

I would have less impersonators. At one point I had over 200 Elvis’s from all over the world wanting to be in my book and I tried to accommodate them all but in the end we could only get 150 in the book due to picture resolution and time constraints. I think the picture quality and resolution was the most difficult problem many of the older ETA’s just had poor picture quality.

What types of books do you like to read? Who are your favorite authors?

Stephen King

Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?

My next book is going to be larger in size 8 ½ by 11 hardcover coffee table book that features the younger Elvis’s coming up and making a name for themselves in the Elvis world. It will be called “NEXT GENERATION KING’S” the name I came up with and will have 50 of the worlds best 68 Comeback Special and Gold Lame’ Elvis’s

What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?

Follow your dream and be patient……take your time and don’t rush……follow through and finish no matter what!

Who is the perfect reader for your book?

Elvis admirers or enthusiasts, Elvis tribute Artists, fans of the artists!

Where can readers learn more about you and your book?

I believe when Joseph makes his new book the 68 comeback and the gold lame. I know for a fact he will use Travis Allen. One of the best 50’s and 68 comeback Elvis performaces I have ever seen. He is listed as one of the best for 2011 Ultimate Tribute Artist on
