Jennifer Bright Reich – Author Interview

What is your most recent book? Tell us a bit about it.

The Mommy MD Guide to Pregnancy and Birth: More than 900 tips that 60 doctors who are also mothers use during their own pregnancies and births, is “due” in June. It’s the first book in our Mommy MD Guides book series, featuring tips that doctors who are also mothers use for their own families.

Tell us something about yourself.

I’m from Allentown, PA, the town Billy Joel made famous in his song “Allentown.” No, it’s not that bad…

I went to the University of Pennsylvania on an Army ROTC scholarship and served four terrific/terrible years on active duty at Fort Lewis, WA. It sure was good to move back home!

What inspired you to write this book?

I want to help people live happier, healthier lives. Also, I thought it would be interesting to feature tips that doctors who are also mothers use for their own families. They’re experts, squared. So far I’ve interviewed more than 75 of them. These women are smart, funny, and fascinating, and it’s a joy to be able to share their stories.

How did you publish this book? Why did you decide on that publisher?

Last year, my friend and business partner, Rallie McAllister, MD, MPH, started a new publishing company, Momosa Publishing LLC, to publish, the Mommy MD Guides book series, and books by other authors, in particular physician-authors.

How did you know you wanted to be a writer? How did you get started?

I think I’ve always known I wanted to be a writer. I’m not particularly good at anything else! I got started so long ago I don’t remember when it was. I even wrote for my middle school newspaper!

What do you believe is the hardest part of writing?

Taking criticism without crying.

How do you do research for your books?

I search online for the most credible, trusted background information. And then I interview smart, fascinating, funny experts.

Did you learn anything from writing this book? What?

Yes! That I had two pretty easy pregnancies! Also, that I am very glad I won’t be having a third pregnancy! And that I’m really looking forward to interviewing more Mommy MD Guides for the next books in our series.

What are you reading now?

I am about to crack open the next book in Joanne Fluke’s series, The Carrot Cake murder. (It’s not a new book, just new to me.)

What types of books do you like to read? Who are your favorite authors? Why?

My favorite books are mysteries, and my favorite authors are Diane Mott Davidson and Joanne Fluke. I used to love to read more serious murder mysteries, but after having kids I can’t read them anymore! They scare me and keep me up at night!

Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?

Yes! The second book in our Mommy MD Guides book series, The Mommy MD Guide to Your Baby’s First Year, will kick off in June. It’s “due” just in time for Mother’s Day 2011.

What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?

Be confident in your abilities and respect other people’s opinions, but know they might misjudge–or underestimate–you. Make it your mission in life to prove them wrong.

What are you doing to promote your latest book?

I Twitter and Facebook often, and we’re working on a major PR burst announcing Mommy MD Guides Day–June 25th–when people can buy The Mommy MD Guide to Pregnancy and Birth on at a special rate–and receive three free gifts.
