Dr. Karen Sherman – Mindfulness and The Art of Choice

What is your most recent book? Tell us a bit about it.

Mindfulness and The Art of Choice: Transform Your Life is a self-help book that enables the reader to learn tools to change the “wired-in” patterns learned in childhood so that as an adult, he or she can stop living on auto-pilot and have a life of possibilities and joy!

Tell us something about yourself.

I’m a NYS Psychologist who has been in private practice for 25 years, though I’ve unofficially been in practice since I’m 8 years old! My specialty is relationships — both to others and to yourself.

What inspired you to write this book?

After facing a very painful depression, which at times I wasn’t sure I could deal with, a gifted therapist taught me tools to help me face and heal my emotional wounds. I then tried these tools with my own clients and saw how much more effective they were than traditional talk therapy. At that point, I felt compelled to let others know that they, too, could have this emotional freedom.

What obstacles did you encounter in getting this book published? How did you overcome them?

At first, I was lucky enough to have an agent take me on. Though we did get a couple of “bites,” nothing ever panned out. After about 1 1/2 years, he felt he could no longer be helpful. Through some personal research, I came across a small independent publisher who dealt with the kind of topic I was discussing. He was very glad to take my work on and I have enjoyed a very personal, attentive relationship with him ever since!

Did you learn anything from writing and publishing this book? What?

Lots of people said that writing the book was the easy part … and they are right. What I have found to really be the aspect that requires the greatest persistence is in it’s marketing. Luckily, I was voted Most Persistent in High School.

What types of books do you like to read? Who are your favorite authors?

I have a variety of genres I like to read. Being in the profession I am in, I’m always trying to read books about self-improvement. I’m also spiritual and so my favorite author in that category is Deepak Chopra. And … when I finally get some down time, I relax with James Patterson and Alex Cross mysteries.

Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?

Though I haven’t totally committed to this yet, I am seriously contemplating putting out some type of book about Choice Tips for Living. I presently have a free monthly newsletter that offers something along those lines and I get a lot of positive feedback about it. I guess that I’d like to share the experience and wisdom I believe I have gained through my years of experience.

What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?

Make sure you are passionate about whatever it is you are going to write about. Not only will that give you the motivation to stay with it but I believe it will bring authenticity to what you write.

Who is the perfect reader for your book?

Adults who are not happy with their lives and ready to make a change!
