Donna Dunning, PhD – 10 Career Essentials: Excel at Your Career By Using Your Personality Type

November 30, 2010 by Cathy B Stucker

What is your most recent book? Tell us a bit about it.

My newest book, 10 Career Essentials: Excel at Your Career by Using Your Personality Type, is a guide for assessing and improving your work performance. The book describes 10 career strategies that are necessary for success in all kinds of work. Links between career success strategies and personality type preferences are provided so you can customize your development based on your personal inclinations, strengths, and challenges.

Tell us something about yourself.

I am a psychologist, author, consultant, certified teacher, and member of the MBTI ® International Training Faculty. For over twenty-five years I have specialized in the areas of career development, learning, and work performance, assisting thousands of people in career transition. I published my first book in 1998, and currently have over a dozen publications. My husband and I live with on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. We have two adult children.

What inspired you to write this book?

There are few resources that describe and define what people need to know and do to be effective at work. In my professional practice, I have worked with many people who received unhelpful work performance feedback, such as “you need to have a positive attitude” or “you need to communicate more effectively”. This feedback didn’t show the person what a positive attitude or effective communication looks like. My goal in this book was to concretely define the behaviors employers are looking for. I enjoy helping others learn and develop and I wanted to demystify job success by creating a practical guide that covered the essential career strategies people need to succeed. 10 Career Essentials includes checklists to assess skills, practical tips, and customized career development strategies to suit an individual’s personality.

How did you choose the title?

I chose the title 10 Career Essentials because the 10 career success strategies are basic for success in any kind of work. The 10 are highly transferable, essential strategies that everyone uses at work.

Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?

My next book, due to be released right away, is the 2nd edition of What’s Your Type of Career? Find Your Perfect Career by Using Your Personality Type. This book helps people find meaningful work that suits who they are. This book helps people understand who they are, how they prefer to approach work, and provides a step-by-step career development process.

What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?

My best advice for other writers is to take your time. Don’t rush through the manuscript, eager to send it away. Whether you write fiction or non-fiction, take time to reflect, revise, and rewrite. Write about what you know and what you feel is important to share.

Who is the perfect reader for your book?

My books are written for people who want practical tips to enhance their career success. The perfect reader for my book is someone who is curious and motivated to learn and grow.
