Denise Fawcett Facey – Can I Be in Your Class?

What is your most recent book? Tell us a bit about it.

“I hate school,” is a statement too often made by students. Yet, this wouldn’t be the case if school were a vibrant place that sparked student interest. Can I Be in Your Class? offers teachers tips and techniques to make learning fun, yet challenging, while invigorating teaching as well.

Who is the perfect reader for your book?

K-12 teachers who are tired of “teaching to the test” and want fresh ways to make learning an enjoyable experience for their students will find this book helpful. While it targets middle and high school teachers, Can I Be in Your Class? is actually relevant for all classroom teachers.

What inspired you to write this book?

Students were my inspiration. If asked, students today often express boredom with school. Yet, bored kids don’t learn; they simply tune out. And, interestingly, teachers don’t usually ask why they’re bored. My goal was to write a book that not only asks, but also provides methods to prevent students from ever uttering those words again.

How did you choose the title?

The students who used to stand at my classroom door and ask, “Ms. Facey, can I be in your class?” were the basis for the title. Invariably, they expressed a desire to participate in a project or activity that they heard we were doing. This prompted me to write a book that detailed techniques other teachers could use to make learning more appealing in their own classrooms, which is how the students’ original query became the title.

Tell us something about yourself.

As much as I enjoyed teaching teenagers — after all, someone has to like them — I’ve found writing equally engaging. Now, I just have a different venue for the creativity and communication I’ve always enjoyed.

What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?

Write your passion. You’re an expert on your own experiences, which lends authenticity to your writing. This is not to say that your writing should be autobiographical, but rather that you need to write from a position of genuine knowledge, understanding and enthusiasm. Regardless of what the topic is, your passion for it illuminates your writing, drawing readers to it and igniting them with your enthusiasm.

Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?

My next book was actually my first! Not as crazy as it sounds, the book I’m currently working on was the first book for which I received a publishing contract, but I declined. Of course, I wrote this book with my students in mind once again. It offers guidance and encouragement to recent graduates who need a little direction in their lives. Now, that I’ve had have a couple of books published, I’ve gone back to that book, expanding it and — I hope — getting it ready for publication. Stay tuned!
