Cathy Diez-Luckie – Author Interview

Dinosaurs on the Move: Movable Paper Figures to Cut Color, and Assemble (April 2010)

Dinosaurs are always a thrill to children and adults. Fearsome, fast carnivores, enormous herbivores, and flying lizards that resembled giant bats-have captured our imaginations for nearly two centuries.

With this book, children can make and color their own movable dinosaur action figures. There is a short introduction that includes facts about habitat, diet, length, weight, the location of fossil discoveries, and key features about each dinosaur. This information can be used to facilitate drama play, science learning, and even discussions of natural history.

Most of the book is made up of detailed pre-colored illustrations based on authentic dinosaur fossils and skeletons. These are the dinosaur parts that children cut out and put together. Black and white line drawings of each figure are also included for children who want to color their own dinosaur. In order to be sturdy enough to play with after assembly, the pages have been printed on sturdy cardstock. A letter key is printed on the back of each figure for easy assembly. The book includes “dinosaur greatest hits” like Tyrannosaurus rex, Pteranodon, and Stegosaurus, as well as less familiar species such as the armadillo-like Ankylosaurus, and the fish-eating Baryonyx.

Tell us something about yourself.

Ever since I could hold a pencil, I have loved to draw. After amusing friends and neighbors with their own portrait, I started a small business in high school by sketching portraits of pets. This graduated to landscape sketches and paintings, and in college I had my own art shows and was in a gallery for a short period of time. My favorite type of art has always been the Dutch Masters and I took up airbrush illustration and did some work for magazines, and children’s books. I have a graduate degree in chemical engineering and have had a career in the medical device field. Currently, my husband and I are home schooling our three children and learning an amazing lesson from it… children have a voracious appetite for books and learning!

How did you publish this book? Why did you decide to self-publish?

I created Figures In Motion, a publishing company that specializes in hands on activity books from the experience I had with my own children and how excited they were to make movable figures. I saw how much fun they had with this that we thought it would be great to share it with other children. Last year we published our first book, Famous Figures of Ancient Times: Movable Paper Figures to Cut, Color, and Assemble. This book has won five national awards for its educational value, creativity, and excellence in publishing and was just named as a finalist in ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year Awards.

What is the most enjoyable part of writing a book like this?

One of the most enjoyable parts of creating this book was studying and sketching the dinosaurs that once walked the earth. It’s thrilling to imagine what it would have been like to see them alive. I also enjoyed meeting and learning about the dinosaurs from the paleontologists who endorsed Dinosaurs on the Move. I gained a deep appreciation for these scientists who have devoted much of their lives to the study of these amazing creatures.

What are you reading now? Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?

Right now I am reading books on the history of the United States and studying the costume of the different time periods. The next books in the history series will include movable action figures of our Founding Fathers, the Presidents, Native Americans, Revolutionary War, and Civil War characters.

What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?

Pursue excellence even in the small things.

What are you doing to promote your latest book?

I have started giving Dinosaur Workshops at libraries, independent bookstores, and at the larger booksellers. I have been working with Kate Bandos at KSB Promotions to get more exposure for my book through reviews. I am also working with my distributor, National Book Network, to expand into the trade, gift, and museum market. I spend a lot of time making telephone calls, sending emails, building my contact list, and send postcards out to bookstore, museum, and retail store buyers. Since I am part of the home school community, I also spend time making sure as many people as possible know about our books through catalogs, reviews, and social media.
