One of the most-asked questions I get from writers who have never written and published an eBook before is, “How would you promote a self-published eBook? Where would you go to even begin selling a product that hasn’t the backup from a traditional or otherwise publisher?”

Well, that’s two, but many writers balk at attempting to play publisher. If they only knew it’s not as hard as they think it is, not to mention all the profits are theirs, I feel more writers would be comfortable to take on a project like this. Not only is self-publishing eBooks a profitable venture, but it also can be used as a valuable tool to gain expert status. Plus, eBooks are really simple to promote as long as you take a no-nonsense guerilla approach to marketing.

As long as you have a market, and have a quality eBook that is free of errors, your eBook can become a success, thus give you that added income. You won’t be sharing the profits with anyone. There is no overhead except for website expenses, which you should already have if you’ve been published before. If you haven’t been published before and don’t want to set up a whole website for this, use one of the free blogging platforms such as Blogger.com or WordPress.com to talk about your new money-making e-Book.

I have successfully promoted several eBooks for myself getting those eBooks into the #1 position in the search engines.

How?

That’s where your guerrilla marketing plan comes in.

Here are a few simple ways I have used to promote my eBooks and get them to the top of the search engines:

Using key search words throughout my selling page and on every single piece of promotional literature I send out.

Using free press release sites frequently, keeping in mind to use those key search words not only in the title, but also throughout the release.

Using free content ezines as vehicles to get my selling page’s link on hundreds upon hundreds of websites (being careful to put the title of your article into google alerts so your article doesn’t get reworded like this to make it sound like another business wrote YOUR article).

Using online storefronts (this is a suggestion; a search in google will find you more) who will list my eBook for free.

Using writer forums and websites that will let you announce your eBook.

Using blogs to announce your eBook and promote it.

Using virtual book tours, thus using other people’s blogs to promote your book.

The secret to selling self-published eBooks (or any kind of eBook or print book, for that matter) is to get your link on as many websites and blogs as you can (an added bonus to this is that it raises your PR ranking in the process).

You have to remember, you have an electronic book. You can’t go on book signings so you have to rely on the Internet to get the word out. But, by following those seven examples above, I’ll guarantee you’ll get the sales you need if you have a market for your book.

So what if you’ve done everything above, and your eBook still isn’t selling?

Where some authors go wrong is that they fail to remember the most important thing you need in order to sell any kind of books—a market.

No amount of promotion is going to do you any good unless you have an audience who is willing to fork out the money.

Before you even put down that first word, you have to ask yourself these following questions:

Who is going to buy my eBook?

Why is my eBook any different than Joe Blow’s eBook on the same subject?

What will my audience gain from my eBook?

Can they already find this information readily on the Internet?

Will my buyers gain something from my eBook, or is it simply to entertain?

Pique your potential buyer’s interest.

Post an excerpt on your website so they can judge for themselves whether your eBook will be something they need.

Once you get into the mindset of your buyer, things start falling in place, and you’ll get those sales you want.

Zero in on your market, do the steps I’ve outlined above, and I’ll guarantee you’ll be selling ebooks like flies on to honey.

Happy promoting to you!

But before I released it, I wrote a letter to my mail list and friends on my Facebook account. In case you missed it, this is what I asked them.

For those who can’t be bothered reading the full post again, basically I whined and moaned about how it took me three years to write my masterpiece, and then I begged each and every one of them to browse the first five chapters, or listen to the “myric” (podcast) on iTunes by searching for Silverbirch.

IF THEY LIKED the Silverbirch chapter samples, I then asked them to head over to Amazon.com and purchase the novel, simultaneously on the exact same day.

I designated Wednesday 4th November as international “Silverbirch Paperback Guinea Pig Project” day.

So. What was the point of this zany idea, you ask?

I wanted to see how many people it would take in one single day to make a dent on the Amazon.com rating system, and figure out if that dent would have an on-going-mass-buying-ripple-effect.

I promised everyone I would let them know how it went, so here I am, true to my word, with the mathematics behind it all.

The Silverbirch Paperback Guinea Pig Project Results
***********************************************************
My mail list has 858 subscribers.
My facebook friend count is sitting at 187 bestest, bestest friends.
That’s 1045 “guinea pigs” (hey, they were all made aware that they were going to be guinea pigs, so please calm down.)

I sent a call-to-arms letter out to all these subscribers last Wednesday at 12 p.m. Melbourne Time, and asked all of my little guinea pigs to please scurry over to Amazon.com and purchase my book! (Again, only if they had first sampled it and liked it.)

Now. Before I go any further, I want to fill you in on some background mathematics in relation to the Amazon.com website. According to Morris Rosenthal’s research (http://www.fonerbooks.com/surfing.htm) Amazon has sold more than 7.5 Million unique titles as of March 2009, and a book must at least sell one copy a year to remain above a rank of 2 Million. Also, ranking positions are calculated hourly.

So. Without further adieu… here’s what happened.

At 2 p.m. I was ranked at #967
At 4 p.m. I was ranked at #1356
At 8 p.m. I was ranked at #3520
And on the following night I was ranked #6534
And five days later, as I type this blog, I am ranked #238791

So.

I bet you want to know how many books I sold around 2 p.m, right?

Well. I don’t exactly know. Because I won’t get that information from my distributors until the end of the month… But going by the number of clicks the “purchase” link had in the letter I sent out, and the number of emails I received from lovely guinea pigs who had bought my book (I asked people to email me once they bought it), I can estimate I sold around 60-70 books around 2 p.m. and then possibly another 10-20 books by 4 p.m.

To summarize, 1045 people were sent the letter, and roughly 80 books were purchased by them on one given day from Amazon.com.
That means 7.6% of my audience checked out the sample chapters and felt compelled to support my independent cause and buy my novel.

And, although I was initially aiming for the top 100, I am absolutely stoked with the outcome of making the top 1000.

Also, another bit of relative information. In the Science Fiction/Fantasy Top 100 genre of Amazon.com on Wednesday, the book that was ranked #100 in that genre was actually ranked #798 overall. So we were perhaps only about 10 books off making the Top 100 for the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre!

Okay. I’ll calm down now.

So why am I passing on this information and what can an author do with it?

I’m passing on this information because we’re living in a different world than we were a few years ago. Major corporations have always spoon-fed the majority of people the information on which books they should buy and what music they should listen to. They have been the “filter-system”. Those days are over, or at least, numbered. Especially considering the way today’s youth have become accustomed to receiving everything digitally, wirelessly and on demand, from each other. They only trust a “good thing” if their mate tells them so, and I believe this is the best system.

I’m passing on this information because we (as creators) have all been thrown into the deep-end of this new form of instant digital distribution and nobody really knows what the greatest way of promoting their masterpiece is, so we may as well work together, trial-and-error style. That being said, I am (and always have been) an avid believer that no matter how people find art (be it music, writing, illustration, painting or performance), if the quality is outstanding and enough people can actually connect with its hidden message, it will become popular. Simple as that.

But what can an author actually do with this little bit of information I’ve gathered from my guinea pig project?

Well, for starters, before you launch your next book, you can concentrate on building a mail list of at least 1000 people who are interested in what you’re doing. Then, when the book is being launched, you can ask your faithful followers to check out samples of your work, and, if they like it, they can and will go and support you by simultaneously purchasing it on the same day from the same store. Keep in mind, I used Amazon for my guinea pig project, but you might like to use a different store. Whatever store you use, if your “guinea pigs” (and I use this term in the nicest possible way) like your product enough, maybe you’ll do a whole lot better than my 7.6% conversion and get a higher ranking on the store chart, which will cause more exposure to other readers of the site, and possibly more sales… And more importantly, more connections.

And for me, connections is what art is all about.

When I write a novel, I’m not just writing a simple story about how one character meets another and they end up falling in love, or they end up solving a murder, or they stumble across a bunch of magical pages that reveal what happens to you after you die… I’m pouring my soul out on to the page and I’m figuring things out about myself I didn’t even know were buried inside. I’m not leading the story, the story is leading me. And I’m giving away secrets about my own personality, and I’m suggesting how I would handle particular situations. And then there’s an audience reading my book. And the audience is wondering how they would handle particular situations. And we’re all connecting, one-on-one. In a noisy airport terminal. In a plane. In a bus. At a train station. And I’m offering a generalized opinion of how I currently see the world, and where I think we’re all heading, through the subtext of the story, and the reader is drawing their own conclusions.

Subtext is the best form of communication, in my eyes, and that’s how you can tell a really good novel from a bad one.

I believe, as an author, you can’t just tell the reader what to think. You have to grant them access to all the necessary information and let them come up with the conclusion on their own. And if they come up with the same unwritten conclusion as you, the author, all on their own, then you’ve just bloody connected, in a really deep and awesome way.

So, there you go. If you’re a young, newbie, independent author (just like me!!), and you’re drawing nearer to releasing your first novel, take a leaf out of my book and aim on getting 1000 people on your mail list (or social networking website) first. Then ask them to try before they buy. Then ask them all to simultaneously buy your book at the same time. And then… if what you’ve written is true-quality, they’ll tell other people and you’ll have many more connections. And you’ll want to write another book for them.

I don’t think my “guinea pig project” concept will make an independent author an overnight success, but it’s a great first step that’s realistic for a new author to aim for, don’t you think?

Marketing books, whether they’re downloadable or in print, can sometimes prove to be a very hard challenge if you’re not used to marketing. So in today’s post I’m going to give you a tip that literally anybody reading these words can do – and the best part is – it only takes 2-5 minutes to start doing!

Even more, when you start doing this it’s also going to increase the power of your website (if you have one) in the search engines because of the backlinks you’ll get from a very trusted source online.

What trusted source am I talking about?

Amazon!

Here’s what you need to do.

Head on over to Amazon and find the category that your book would be under. And no, if your book is downloadable it doesn’t matter – this will still work.

What you’re going to do is find that category and start looking at books similar to yours but not competing, and simply start leaving as many comments as you can! Of course you’ll want to include a link to YOUR book.

Maybe one thing you can do is talk about a specific subject in which one of those books fell short of the mark and mention how your book talks more in-depth about that subject which would help the reader out more.

Either way, what you’re going to want to do is provide true unique value for the people who will be reading those comments. Since you have your link you want to prove yourself to be an authority on the subject instead of just another person trying to get their name out there.

And of course, the last thing you’ll need is a call to action. Instead of simply adding a link you can put something like “check out ‘website here’ for tips on ‘whatever it is that you’re selling’”.

If you are a member of the Amazon Advantage program, you may be frustrated by receiving weekly orders for odd lots of your books. There is a simple solution, though, that will make it easier to manage your Advantage stock.

Filling orders takes time. When those orders are not for full cases of books they take even longer, as each order must be repacked. And when Amazon is making frequent, small orders, you increase the chances that a sudden increase in demand will cause your book to be out of stock at some point.

Amazon offers a solution for Advantage publishers that can eliminate those small, odd lot orders and the hassles that go with them. I currently ship books to Amazon about four times a year, and never have a problem with my book going out of stock. I do this by submitting quarterly stock-up requests, asking Amazon to order a supply of books. Here is how you can do this:

Log in to your Advantage account, and click on the Contact Us link (currently located at the bottom of the page). On the contact form where it says “Select Issue,” select “Orders, Confirmation and Shipping,” then under “Select Subissue,” choose “Stock-Up Request.”

List the titles you want Amazon to stock-up, along with the quantity of each item. You must also provide a reason for the stock-up request. For example, you may request that Amazon order a larger-than-usual quantity of books because of an upcoming promotion or publicity. I use stock-up requests to avoid shipping small quantities of books in multiple orders. I might say something like this where they ask for the reason for the request:

I would like to ship a three-month supply in full-case lots. Sales average 100 books per month, and the books are packed in cartons of 30. I am therefore requesting that you order 300 books (10 cartons). Thank you for considering my request.

Make your request reasonable. I always ask them to order a three-month supply, and my requests have always been accepted.

Provide complete information. Why this number of books? What is the ASIN or ISBN of the book, as well as the title?

Be polite. Amazon is not obligated to order the number of books you would like them to. You are asking them to do something that will make your life easier, so ask nicely.

If you are the author of a book, ebook or audio product available on Amazon.com, you can have a blog on the Amazon site through Amazon Connect.

Amazon Connect can bring more people to your product page where they can learn about and buy your book, it can inform customers about your upcoming events and new products, and it can lead Amazon customers to your web site or blog.

Your Amazon Connect blog will display on your product detail page. It will also be shown to customers who have purchased your books from Amazon in the past, and others who choose to subscribe.

The best part? It is easy and free. Here is all you have to do.

You will need to have an Amazon customer account. You probably already have one, but if you do not then go to http://www.Amazon.com/ and sign up.

Next, go to http://www.Amazon.com/connect and click on the “Sign up now” button.

You will have to answer some basic questions, and identify the products you are claiming as yours. Amazon will also want to verify that you are in fact the author of these books. You will be asked to provide contact information for your publisher, agent, publicist, distributor or other party who can verify your identity. I am self-published, so I pointed out that the email address on the account I was registering with Amazon Connect was the same as the email address on my Amazon Advantage account. They accepted that as verification.

Once your account is approved, just log in to http://www.Amazon.com/connect to start posting to your blog. Creating a post is as simple as writing something in Word, and you can add media such as pictures and video.

Posting is even easier if you already have a blog. Just enter the RSS feed at Amazon Connect and your Amazon blog will automatically update each time you add a post to your other blog. You can see this on my product detail page for The Mystery Shopper’s Manual. The RSS feed from my mystery shopper blog automatically sends my blog posts to the Amazon page.

Another use for Amazon Connect is to put video on your product page. Of course, if you want the video to stay on the page, you may choose not to use the RSS feed from your blog in Amazon Connect, because new blog posts will push the older ones off the page. An alternative would be to periodically post new videos or periodically repost the old videos to Amazon Connect.

Having a free blog on Amazon is a simple and free way to promote and sell more books.

Cathy Stucker is the author of The Mystery Shopper’s Manual and many other books. You can learn more about mystery shopping at her mystery shopper blog.

What is a “Kindle”?
The Kindle is a wireless device that makes it easy to purchase and download reading material. It does not have to be connected to a computer, and you do not need to go searching for a mobile “hot spot” in order to connect to the Amazon store. Because it is so easy to buy content, customers buy often.

Although converting your print book to a digital format (ebook) is one possibility, you can also sell content that is not available in printed form. And your content does not need to be a traditional book length manuscript. You also do not need to get an ISBN to sell Kindle content on Amazon.

Here is how to sell your books to Kindle owners. Start by going to the Amazon Digital Text Platform. If you have an Amazon account, you can log in using the same information. If not, you can set up a free account.

Next, you upload your content in one of the many supported formats. Amazon recommends uploading HTML files, but you can upload your Kindle content as a Word document, text file or PDF. (PDFs are not recommended as there are sometimes formatting problems with PDFs on the Kindle.) You will find step-by-step instructions for publishing your content at Amazon’s Digital Text Platform.

Within a day or so after uploading, your book or other content should be available in the Kindle store.

How Much Do You Get Paid?
You set the price for your digital products, and Amazon pays a 35% royalty on all sales. That means if you set a price of $9.99, Amazon will pay you $3.50 for each sale. This is true even if Amazon chooses to discount the price. Any discount comes out of their share of the price, not yours.

The Kindle provides a new way to reach out to readers and sell more of your work.

Would you like to make your books available to the millions of people who shop at Amazon.com? It is easier than you may think to list your book in the world’s largest book store and start selling more books.

Amazon.com levels the playing field for small presses and self-publishers by selling our books right next to books from the largest New York publishing houses. My books have been available on Amazon.com since 2000, and I have sold thousands of books through them–books that I might not have sold without Amazon.com.

So how can you start selling your books at Amazon.com? If your book is published by a traditional or vanity publisher, they will put your book on Amazon. If you have a distributor, or use a POD printer, they may handle getting your book into the Amazon catalog. However, if you are self-published and don’t have a distributor, the easiest way to sell your book on Amazon.com is to join Amazon Advantage at http://www.Amazon.com/advantage.

To participate in Advantage, you must have distribution rights, and your book must have a scannable barcode of the ISBN. You get 45% of the retail price of your book, Amazon gets 55%. The amount you are paid is based on the retail price you set for the book, and is not affected if Amazon chooses to discount the price at which they sell the book. If you set a list price of $20 for your book, Amazon will pay you $9 for each copy sold.

Amazon pays for books after they have been sold. You will receive payment for books sold in January at the end of February. Sign up for direct deposit and the money will simply drop in to your bank account every month. The annual fee to participate in Advantage (currently $29.95) is deducted from your account each May, and a prorated fee is deducted from the first payment due to you after joining Advantage.

There are publishers who do not like the fact that Amazon demands a 55% discount. They believe that Amazon should receive a discount comparable to what other book stores would receive, such as 40%. However, Amazon.com is not your average book store.

If I sold to Amazon through a wholesaler or distributor, I would have to give at least a 55% discount. And, it would take longer to get my money from anyone else. The wholesaler or distributor would pay me some time after they were paid by Amazon, so it would probably take at least 30 days longer to get my money. And when I have sold directly to book stores, it has usually taken several months to get paid. I have never had to so much as send an invoice or an email to get paid, on time, by Amazon. Plus, no book store can give you the worldwide visibility you get on Amazon.com.

When you are in the Advantage program, you ship books to Amazon and they fill orders to customers. Once your application is approved you will receive your first order from Amazon, usually for two books. When those books sell, Amazon will order more. Expect that your first orders will be onesies-and-twosies, but as sales pick up they will order more at a time.

Once your book is accepted into the Advantage program, log in to your account to access lots of tips to help you market your book on Amazon.com. Adding a cover image, description, editorial reviews and other information will make your book more visible when customers search, and will help you to make more sales.

I see these questions a lot:

“Why is Amazon allowing people to sell used books on my selling site?”

“How did these people get my books when they’ve just been released?”

“One of my review copies (galley or finished copy) is being sold on Amazon–what can I do about it?”

Well, I think I can answer those, and a couple more.

First, let’s define terms. A “Marketplace” seller is someone who is selling just a few items on Amazon. They don’t do a lot of business. A “Z-Shop” is a dedicated on-line and/or brick and mortar store with an Amazon presence (and probably Half.com and eBay as well). For ease of use, we’ll refer to all of these sellers as “Marketplace sellers.”

Now, say you sell some books to a bookstore that retails used and new books. You drop by one day and discover they have a worn copy of your book at a discounted price shelved right next to a shiny new one being sold at full price. That doesn’t bother you, does it? You know that people who like new books are going to buy the new one. Folks who like a deal will buy the slightly scuffed one. At one point or another, the scuffed one got paid for, so you aren’t out any money. You could wish everyone bought new, but they don’t.

Same thing with the Marketplace system. Yes, we’d all prefer that Amazon hadn’t done this, but there’s a brisk business in used books–always has been, always will be. This is a situation where they are fulfilling a market demand. This works out even better for you than the bookstore example above: you get paid twice for every used book sold. Somewhere along the line you sold the book–perhaps directly to that Marketplace seller. If the buyer goes through your website link to buy your book from them (you have to be an Amazon Associate to do this) you’ll get 2.5% of the sale of that book.

Now, how did those little devils get your book new? It is with 98% surety that I tell you they got the book through Baker & Taylor or Ingram. Some booksellers specialize in new release books on the internet. They subscribe to one or both wholesalers’ new releases program; when a new book comes out, they buy it or simply list it, opting to purchase the book only when they have an order. They can sell for lower because they aren’t paying the 55% you are. BUT, they paid for the book. It’s sold and you got the money! Don’t worry about it. And, as I said, you often get a percentage of their sale. You really do get the last laugh.

What about those galleys, advanced reading copies and review copies that show up on the Marketplace? Well friends, those are flat illegal in the Amazon scheme of things. When Marketplace vendors sign the contract to sell on Amazon, one of the things they promise is never to sell galleys or review copies of books. You have every right to zip off an e-mail demanding that the book is withdrawn or you will report the violation to Amazon (perfect security is not an Amazon hallmark). Don’t write an angry righteous letter—they probably don’t even know what they’re doing is wrong. Compose a businesslike e-mail calmly explaining the consequences of their actions. Nine times out of ten, the offending book will disappear from your Amazon page within a day, sometimes sooner.

Now, let’s make some money! I don’t know about you, but I end up with a small percentage of my books getting dinged in transit, sometimes I get returns that are scuffed and once I had a fair amount of books left over from a previous edition. Shazam! I became an Amazon Marketplace seller! Instead of filling up a landfill with unwanted books, I turned my trash books into cash!

Jacqueline Church Simonds has written short stories and poetry published in “little” literary magazines; won Honorable Mention in the Baltimore Sun Summer Fiction contest; been the fiction editor of a university literary magazine Bartleby; and has had a piece in Down East magazine. Captain Mary, Buccaneer was her debut in print.

Why Should Your Book Be on Amazon.com?

Credibility. If your book is important, it should be available at the world’s biggest book store.

Visibility. People (including members of the media) will find your book and learn about you through your appearance on Amazon. (That’s how I got into Woman’s Day magazine.)

Money. You will sell books you wouldn’t have sold otherwise. Many buyers won’t buy from your Web site or other sources, but will buy at Amazon. And, Amazon pays like clockwork.

Get Your Book Listed on Amazon.com

Your publisher or distributor will handle getting your book into the Amazon catalog. If you are self-published and don’t have a distributor, join Amazon Advantage at http://www.Amazon.com/advantage

To participate in Advantage, you must have distribution rights, and your book must have a scannable barcode of the ISBN. You get 45% of the retail price of your book, Amazon gets 55%. (How much you get is based on the retail price of the book, and is not affected if Amazon chooses to discount the price at which they sell the book.)

Amazon Marketplace

Once your book is listed, you can also sell it directly to consumers through Amazon Marketplace. You will find more information about this on the Advantage information page listed above.

Amazon Associates

Once your book is listed on Amazon, join the Associates program http://www.Amazon.com/associates

As an Associate, you get a commission on book sales referred from your Web site. Why send people to Amazon from your Web site? Some people won’t buy from you. They don’t know you and they don’t trust you. But they do trust Amazon. Or, maybe they want to qualify for free shipping.

Enhance Your Book’s Detail Page

Add cover art, book description, editorial reviews, table of contents, excerpts, author information and more. Make your book’s listing just as complete and impressive as the latest from Stephen King, John Grisham and other major authors. For more information, see Bookseller Services at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/13685551/ref=br_bx_c_1_0/002-9353983-4804009/ or log in to your Advantage account.

You can make additions or corrections to the information about your book with the Book Content Update Form. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/14061781/ref=br_bx_c_1_2/002-9353983-4804009

Search Inside the Book

This is controversial, but many publishers say they sell more books as a result of SITB. My sales seemed to go up after my book was in. To participate, you send Amazon a copy of your book, they scan it and make the entire book searchable. It increases the chances your book will come up during searches on the Amazon.com web site. There is information about the program, including where to send the book, on the Advantage page.

Use the tools Amazon.com provides to bring book buyers to your page and sell more books.
